Rising and Falling of Prices during Covid-19 Pandemic – Virus 13

One of Japanese foods, just for illustration

Last two shopping trips at grocery stores, we noticed price increasing. Yes, we heard news from mainstream medias about price increasing of grocery items. We are not aware so much in real life.

It is said that grocery prices have been increased by average of 2.6%. But, we believe several items more expensive, may be more than 3.5%. Some of them:

- eggs (We saw supply shortages).
- bread
- doughnut
- muffin
- cookies
- fruits (oranges, apples, citrus)
- soft drinks, juice
- protein sources (chicken, fish, meat)
- vegetables, especially canned vegetables

Clothes inside Walmart supermarket

Panic shopping is the reason price increase at the beginning of Covid-19 Pandemic, now, here two prominent reasons:

- disrupting of “food supply chains” which include production, processing and delivery systems from farmers (producers) to stores across the nation.

- demand keep continue, even higher in some foods after panic shopping, but supply chains such as meat processing are closing, thus causes food shortages.

However, we have good news that rising and falling in price come together. I noticed these items are getting lower in price:
- sausage
- butter
- tomatoes
- cupcakes

In addition to groceries, following items and services are dropping in prices as well:
- gasoline (raw and at stations)
- clothes
- car and car insurances
- airfare (travel tickets)

Do you notice any increasing and tumbling in prices in your areas? What items and services?

  1. Yes I think so. Now in Spain we are going to the "new normality" but I think that the economical crisis will be terrible.

  2. Hopefully we see costs settle soon. It is difficult seeing food prices rise when that is one of the most essential things we all need.

  3. I live in a city where agriculture is very important. Many fruits grow with watermelon, citrus olives and olive oil cultivation. However, the farmer could not export in a difficult situation.

  4. Price, somebody thinks it would be rising, where is it, everywhere they are prices risings, that it is capitalism???????????????????.

  6. So far, so good with prices here in the Pacific Northwest. We've seen shortages from panic buying, but products are restocked at the same price.

  7. The increased prices seems to have happened in a lot of places. Where I live the prices didn't really go up but the stuff was not on sale. I've noticed my usual shop is about $30-50 dollars more each week and I'm not even buying as much as I normally do. My friends in Kenya tell me the prices went up there.

  10. Nice recipe, I can't believe there was an shortage on your country but I guess in every part of the world people made supplies and therefore things started to finish. We had some problems in finding yeast here in Italy because people made lots of bread and pizza at home but the biggest problem were and still is the rising prices for almost all foods.
I shall try this recipe because we all love asian cuisine.

  11. Your post is very interesting Tanza !! I see that not only in Spain the prices of many items have risen, unfortunately. Here the prices of fruits and vegetables especially have risen a lot, milk, eggs too. Let´s see in the future.
    Have a great new week,

  14. I did noticed increase unfortunately. Gas is cheaper but food or cosmetics not.

  15. The only thing around here that was cheaper was gas and I think that is going up in price again. We always end up shopping in three different stores to get the best prices. I wish we could have chickens where we live. We still have trouble getting cerain things as panic buying is still going on. UGH!!

  19. It’s good you are aware of price increases, and hopefully they will come down soon. I remember my grandma always knew which products were on sale, so she’d send us to three grocery stores for five or six items.

  20. Yes, meat prices have increased dramatically. But you're right about gasoline. Thankfully, I haven't had to depend on the grocery store for many vegetables (mainly fruits) because of a garden, but the last of the lettuce is in (I can grow lettuce from November to early May here, but when the temperatures start remaining in the 80s, it bolts.
